What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a medical exam used to determine whether a commercial driver meets the physical qualification standards required to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. Prepare Before Your Exam

  • Get a good night of sleep.
  • Take prescribed medications as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid coffee, energy drinks, nicotine, and heavy meals right before the exam if you are concerned about blood pressure. Caffeine can raise blood pressure temporarily.
  • Drink enough water so you can provide a urine sample.
  • Bring your glasses, contacts, hearing aids, or medical documents if needed.
  • Arrive early enough so you are not rushed or stressed.

DOT Physical Blood Pressure Guidelines

Blood pressure is one of the most common reasons drivers receive a shorter DOT medical certificate. In general:

  • Under 140/90: may qualify for up to a 2-year certificate.
  • 140–159 / 90–99: commonly a 1-year certificate.
  • 160–179 / 100–109: may result in a one-time 3-month certificate while blood pressure is brought under control.
  • Over 180/110: disqualifying until controlled.

Disclaimer: These are general FMCSA blood pressure guidelines. The final decision depends on the medical examiner's review, your medical history, and current DOT/FMCSA standards. DOT Physicals LA does not guarantee that any driver will pass or be issued a medical certificate.
